So Thankful to Know the Creator

We were running a little late Sunday so Chad dropped me off at work with the plans of a fresh sea air excursion in the morning to walk “home” (our motel) from work.  I didn’t know what kind of treat I was in for.  The cool breeze was refreshing, the view was amazing and I found myself singing hymns to myself as I walked along.

There were two small fishing boats out on my end of the bay and you could see the bobbing heads of the playful sea lions with the barking from the bay front strip carrying across the water.  I felt blessed to have witnessed it.  When I returned to work tonight tired from a day of very sparatic sleep armed with coffee. I was not expecting anymore amazed by my environment moments.  Shortly into the shift when we, my partner in crime for the night, and I were stocking the triage rooms we were amazed to witness the most brightly colored sunsets I have seen in a while.  The pictures don’t show it well but the clouds were my favorite color of hot pink!!! Really!!! So humbled by how great our God is!

Zeppelins, Dirigibles, and Airships

Today I took the kids to a place that I have wanted to visit for a long time. We have driven past the Tillamook Air Museum many times and never took the time to stop. We drove up there this morning leaving Sarah to get some sleep. The air museum is 1072 ft long 192 ft tall and a width of 297 ft. This all adds up to over 7 acres and one of the largest wooden buildings constructed. It was amazing to see. The kids had such a blast looking at the planes and especially enjoyed siting and playing in the trainers (replicas of cockpits that had all of the controls levers and switches in them). They told me several times that it was a lot of fun. Afterwards we had to make a stop at the cheese factory for some squeaky cheese for the drive home. It filled the day and the kids learned a lot about blimps and even a fair amount about the Hindenburg. They really enjoyed the hands on learning.

So Scattered

(I typed this up a week or so ago and it just didn’t get posted)

I am missing what I appriciate most about travel nursing…

You all are familier with the “over booked” feeling.  Between soccer practice, swimming lessons, homework, piano, AWANAs, karate, dad’s job and mom’s job. Play groups, Sunday school, and errands.  You are not sure which direction to head first or what to do next.  When we travel we have our house or appartment or home base.  We totally check out of the business.  The only “must do”s on the calendar is work.  We are all together most of the time, never really going in opposite directions…hey what are we really going to do with only one family car.  Yes we still are traveling, but we are close enough to home that we get split up.  I am so thankful that my parents were able to watch the kids so Chad could go to a men’s retreat through church, I love that he gets to do that.  This last three months has been a good season of being home with extended family, when we are ready to settle back into our permanent jobs, school and work this balance of being purposeful about not getting over scheduled will be my biggest struggle and the free feeling you have when you are unplugged from all of that is going to be the biggest thing I will miss from traveling.   We are not there yet incase any of you are reading between the lines. 😀 The time will come but not yet.

Before and After

Hannah, Eve and I got our hair cut this afternoon.  I’m pretty sure that February 2014 was the last time my hair was touched with scissors.  Maybe that is why it feels so good to finally have it cut. The Girls had their hair cut in January or February of this year, but Hannah was wanting to do something drastic. Hannah was first up here are her before and after pictures.

She donated 12 inches to Wigs for Kids.

Eve was up next and had lots of instructions for Andrea.  She wanted it to be bright Red like the girl in the hair style book, and not very much trimmed off.  I wanted it to be easier to comb and the bangs short enough she couldn’t chew on them. Here is her before and after.

We said no to the bright red dye job but she got some chalk colors in her new bangs.

I wanted shoulder length but still able to go in a pony tail if I needed it up at work. Here is my before and after (before was from two days ago).  I’m on the right.  Jk

 This one shows it better.

Any ways, it was long and scraggly with major split ends.  Here is the after picture.

A year and a half worth of growth cut off.  It feels great!

Travelers Conference 2015

The Travelers Conference has grown quite a bit since we last attended in 2013.  This year there was 77 vendor booths, many of which were travel healthcare recruiter companies, but others who specialized in financial planning (A Dave Ramsey approved company I was so glad to see his name flashed at the conference as there are a portion of travel nurses who travel because they are trying to pay down debt or because their debts have become so great it is the only way to keep from drowning), nursing shoes, a company specializing in short term housing location, Travel Tax, Pan Travelers, an online company where you can store PDFs of all of your nursing documents and they send you reminders when licenses and certifications are going to be expiring as well as immunization records, Highway Hypodermics who have written a book that gives potential travel nurses an understanding through stories about many of the aspects of travel nursing and more.  We skipped some class and discussion time to talk to the venders and still did not make it to everyone, that maybe mostly my fault as I can talk and talk and talk about things that I am passionate about.  The one I was amazed to see was Mercy Ships!!! Also there were two break out sessions one on Volunteering internationally as well as working internationally.  This is new (Chad reminded me that they did have a working internationally class two years ago), and I love it!  We nurses give of ourselves to others daily at work, but there is even more of a benefit to the satisfactions we have with our work when there are times we can give with no expectation of receiving anything in return (paycheck).  With approximately 700 nurses and allied health providers attending the conference ranging from “dreamer” to “veteran” traveler it really was an amazing sight to see.

Day one we learned about Lead Generation sites which was pretty enlightening, we attended classes taxes and health insurance  as well as tax homes.  Missing the round table discussions to visit with vendors we did make it in for the closing presentation by the Keynote Speaker Jeff Solhiem which was also foreign mission focused and was amazing to hear.  I am eager to go home and look up the tv special “A Night in the Jungle” on YouTube just out of curiosity.  We then made our way back to the room for a rest.  To same my self some work later I read through the pamphlets I had been given and weeded through the business cards.  The JCAHO accredited ones, the ones where the recruiter impressed upon me the character values I look for in a team mate (as if we were to work together we rely heavily on each other).  I take a little notes on the cards to prompt my memory of the conversations we had had with each. It is recommended that as a travel nurse you work with not just one but a handful of companies, 4 or 5.  I have worked with three different ones AB Staffing because of their Indian Health Services contracts, Genesis Medical Staffing Solutions because the recruiter who contacted me initially and I got off on a good foot and we have enjoyed each other’s friendship (we are still friends, but she has since moved to another company which happens a lot in this industry) and the third company Medical Staffing Solutions LLC who I initially started working with because they specialize in Hawaii, Alaska, and now the Virgin Islands I worked with them for my Hilo assignment and am excited to work again with them for my up coming assignment which has yet to be completely finalized.  I don’t plan on jumping ship with any of them but I do still like to keep my eyes and ears open as we look to eventually in the next year look towards the east coast as many of the companies are regional.  At 7:30 pm we headed down to dinner as we had been invited by Everine and Medical Staffing Solutions LLC to come and have dinner with them.  Búzios was a seafood resaurant I enjoyed my scallops thoroughly and Chad enjoyed his steamer plate, but the best thing of all was the company!  I sat next to one of the owners who was very personable as we discussed their recent tour of the hospitals in the Virgin Islands, oportunity for cultural exposure and the safety concerns that would need to be addressed with each nurse who considered an assignment there.  There is defiantly something nice about a company that checks out each hospital before they would be willing to send a nurse there.  It was a low key hang out with friends dinner getting us back to our room a little after 10:00pm.  The lights out our window were fabulous and we kept the curtains open all the way absorbing the view as we settled into bed.

Day two started 45 minutes later and was a little more casual, I don’t remember seeing any grumpy people, the overal feel was positive and energetic.  Breakfast and lunch again were delicious (day one the only gluten free lunch option was potato salad, and it was very good.  Chad said that the rest of the food was great as well) the coffee was, no joke, way better than Starbucks and I like Starbucks.  We arived early to talk to more venders but seriously making a valiant effort there was about ten we never made it to.  Medical staffing Solutions LLC had a photo booth right in front.  Everine and I took advantage of the opportunity to get a photo together.

Everine was my recruiter for Hilo, she is a Hilo local and worked hard to get me a car and housing that would fit our family of five and our budget.  It was so amazing to see her working so hard for me.  Below is Belinda and her husband they were my introduction to travel nursing as I worked for quite a while with Belinda at Silverton Hospital, so when it was time for us to make that leap of faith we could ask her any questions.  What a great resource and friend!

My handsome captain, Chad works the hardest of the the two of us!  He does a lot of my paperwork as well as cook, care for the kids and teach them.  So fun!  I love this picture of us!  We learned about cyber protection, VPNs, international volunteering and working, as well as traveling in an RV (all different types compared) vs. apartments.
Vietnamese food for dinner and more sorting of papers and “goodies” for the kids, we pre packed our bags a bit and went to bed.

This morning we enjoyed the most delicious corned beef hash and then checked out of the hotel.  We didn’t pre arrange an airport shuttle because this is not our first rodeo and it has never been a problem before.  We asked at the front desk about it and they said we had to have reserved our seats 8 hours in advance so it would not be available, we would have to call a cab.  Walking out to the front of the hotel Medical Staffing Solutions LLC owners were headed out at the same time with a lot of stuff so we held the doors for them.  We asked how the after party had gone since we did not go, and chatted about the conference over all.  They asked us if we were taking the shuttle to the airport so we told them our dilemma.  They said, “come with us, we will take care of you.” We followed them around to the shuttle loading area and loaded the shuttle to the airport.  We asked about covering the gratuity at least and they said, ” No, we have you covered.” ️Thank you thank you thank you Medical Staffin Solutions LLC seriously! We may have walked to the hotel from the airport but it took a while and we could have gotten a cab, but we really enjoyed the company and it WAS SO MUCH EASIER!! Bye Las Vegas, and in response to the nurse pride going around this week, I am so glad that I get to be a nurse!

Made it to Vegas

I probably should not calculate my sleep this week in hours, just be greatful that I’m functioning with seemingly few deficits.  Chad and I got up this morning at four, the kids were already at Grandma and Grandpa Owens, but with getting home late I had not yet packed my bag.  It’s a good thing I don’t have much in the way of clothing options so there were no hard decisions.  Chuck (Chad’s dad) drove us to the airport in Portland ariving at 0600 to a security check point line longer than I have ever seen it. Good thing we were not all going to Vegas.

There was two legs to our flight with no sleep on either.  I did get to read through some of the paperwork from the AWHONN conference and send out an email.

We arived around noon.  Last time we walked from the airport to our hotel, the heat was a bit of a problem, the distance was a little longer than it had looked, and Chad had a duffle bag with only a small handle.  It didn’t end up being a very fun walk.  This time it was cloudy we had only backpacks and we thought we knew what kind of distance we were getting ourselves into so against our better judgement we decided to walk again.  GPS said 4.5 miles/1.5hours walking time.  Hmmmm is it just me or does that seem further than last time I thought out loud.  It was hot with a good breeze whisking away some of my sweat and tangling my hair as it whipped behind me.  We stopped about two miles into our walk for lunch and a little AC.  I must have been a sight with my tomato red face and sweat soaked back.  A big glass of fresh Iced tea hit the spot, we were encouraged that we were almost half way.

The clouds started spitting at us and we wondered if it might not just start downpouring.  We ducked in and out of hotels down the strip just to try and cool off. This carpet is so fun!
By the time we got to where we stayed last time my feet and hips were starting to balk about the pavement pounding and we were still not really that close.  I don’t think I realized our hotel was not on the strip (although not disappointed).  We checked in around 3:00pm soaked in sweat, but still smiling.  The exercise was good for me.  I’m sure my aching hips are going to need an Advil intervention tomorrow.  After a nap and a shower (I fell asleep laying across the bed in my sweaty clothes 😬) we headed down to find the conference location and try out the Vietnamese restaurant.  Phó soup with tripe, oxtail, and tenderloin, veggie and shrimp rolls with peanut sauce and duck.  Chad and I sat beside eachother sharing each one.  They were all amazing.  I don’t know if we will make it out to try any other restaurants as we are already making plans to go back and try a few of the other dishes that looked interesting.   It is just barely 8:00pm and we are calling it a night.

A Quick Trip to Idaho

This is not my quickest trip to Idaho ever save one other time.  With an already packed schedule, when I got word on the 3rd of Jerry’s (surrogate family from our growing up years) passing I prayed that his service would fall on one of the three days this month that we didn’t have commitments.  When the memorial service times and dates were announced I started running through all my options of how it would be possible to make it to the service.  I did and still do feel incredibly blessed to have made it to the hospital a few weekends ago to say goodbye in person. Perhaps it is the nurse in me that made me want to show my support of the family in person, but it was more than that.  I wanted to witness the legacy I knew and felt especially in my conversations with Jerry in the more recent years, I wanted to be home and grieve with other people who felt the same loss, and I was looking forward to the faces from my past that I would get to see in the process.  Coined by his grandson, Jerry was a giant (figuratively) his character and integrity are unmatched in anyone else that I have ever known, he was instrumental in the Cambridge community, serving on boards and giving time and money to many causes and missions, yet he was humble, always studying and reading his Bible a well as  creation science research.  It was amazing to sit and hear from the congregation time and time again where the example and life that Jerry lead had touched each one of them.  I also loved that, in such a painful time as this, his wife Carol had this encouragement…. “Anyone could live a life like Jerry’s if only they would spend time everyday in God’s word.”

I would not change the decision to drive from The AWHONN conference in Medford yesterday afternoon to Salem then to Pendleton on to Cambridge and now back all the way to Salem.  Jerry has passed the baton to all of us.  We know the gospel message, we have a Bible in our homes and we know what it takes (see above quote).  The ball is in our court let us run the race set out for us.

Below is a picture of our farm dinners.  I am missing (I think at kids camp) but Steph, Suzanne, mom and dad are on the right.  On the left is Ron, Kris and their boys and at the far end of the table is Jerry and Carol.

I used to babysit these cute boys and there little brother who was on the way at the time this picture was taken.

Jerry teaching farming to his grandson.

  Unforgettable smile and kind eyes.

Spelunking and the missing shoe

Today we decided to visit our last national park in Oregon. So we dropped off Sarah and headed out to Oregon Caves.

image

We dug out our sweatshirts and coats and prepared to dive into a cave that had over 500 steps and a low ceiling of 48 inches at the lowest.

On the way out if the cave Caleb lost a shoe on the last stairwell. Luckily the were able to get a retrieval team to go in and get it for us.

It was beautiful up in the park and we got to enjoy some the wildlife.

It made for a fun day that passed the time quickly till we had to go back to Medford to pick up Sarah.

Risky Business

I feel a pain in my heart and don’t think I can adequately discribe it.  I started feeling it’s twang in my chest today as I sat and listened to a very educated and professional nurse/midwife/legal expert but as I think back it is not my first experience with this feeling.  Every decision or indecision as a labor and delivery nurse these days has to be examined based on how it would look in a deposition, every documented or not documented action, conversation, assessment, collaboration has to be able to stand up to extreme scrutiny.  That may be one thing if we were allowed time to document each at the moment it occurred but in general these things happen simultaneously and consecutively.  In a deposition (from my understanding based on coworkers experiences) the tone is accusing and at best feels like bullying.  The memories of these events are distant if there is any recollection after the years that have passed and the number of deliveries that have happened in between.  For me, being a nurse who puts her whole heart and energy into taking the best care of my patients that I possibly can, this perspective makes every anxious little mama potentially the end of my career by lawsuit.  No amount of studying and preparation, drills and certifications will give you a 0% maternal and infant mortality or morbidity rate.  So each day I go to work to love and serve my patient and play roulette with my own life.  This is not right.  Sometimes I feel like we should all tell our kids to not be teachers, policemen, nurses, or doctors it’s not worth it. (I know we are called to be servants of all, no promise of anyone ever being greatful)
