Theda Clark Birth Center

Wow, I’m not sure I slept a wink all night. I don’t think I was nervous, I just didn’t sleep. I checked the clock on my phone at least 5 times between midnight and 4:15am when the alarm went off. It actually didn’t feel all that early and I felt quite awake and quite ready for the day after a quick shower, banana and cup of tea. It took less time than I anticipated to get to the hospital, and less time than I anticipated to find the unit and be ready for report (05:03 for report at 05:30) it will take me a few days to get the timing all down so I don’t have to get up extra early but am getting to work in enough time that I don’t have to stress about getting there on time. I oriented with a fun energetic nurse and we had a very busy day. A little too busy to be conducive to learning the charting system well, but I think I got a good introduction and am hoping that I will feel pretty good about the flow of things by the end of the shift tomorrow. I was home a half hour late but a lot of ground was covered, and Chad had dinner ready when I pulled up with reports of a lot of math getting done today. They kids were all playing in the back yard with the neighbor kids and ran to greet me. After dinner they went back out. So far they like Wisconsin and think it reminds them of Oregon. We will see how they do with the cold weather as I hear that will start to hit by Halloween. I’m turning in early tonight and Eve and I are going to cuddle as we both really need some sleep.
Good night, thank you for your continued prayers and support.

Gearing up for the work week and early mornings

I so slept in this morning.  Way way in.  I figured it may make up for the sleep I’m going to miss the next few mornings when the wake up call comes at 4:15 am.  I was awakened by kids bouncing on me and on the air mattress which in turn bounced me some more.  Then came a facetime call from Suzanne, what a lovely surprise that was.  We got to see Hadassah’s zebra hair, and Elijah’s amazingly blue eyes and kissable cheeks.  We talked for a good long time and the kids gave her a FaceTime tour of our apartment.  Around 11:30 (please forgive me for staying in bed so late) I climbed out of bed and made myself useful by getting the dishes done and doing some more cleaning and organizing around the house.  Chad came home from the store with a fold up card table and camp chairs, yay for having our dining room all set up.  We sat around our new table and enjoyed lunch together.  The kids cleaned their room and brought out their math books, as requested to start warming up for the school year again.  I feel like we may have to do more remedial work on math this year than last, as we have taken a longer break and it doesn’t seem to be either one of the big kids’ strong suit.  Math and more cleaning.  Everything is set out for the early morning shift.  My lunch bag is all packed and I got in a phone call to my mom.  A yummy dinner of tacos was prepared by Chad, and a quiet walk around the neighborhood with Myra ended the evening.  Chad and I discussed the next two weeks plan over a glass of ice tea and headed to bed.  I’m hoping the melatonin will kick in soon.  Good night you all.  Prayers for things to go smoothly at work in the morning would be much appreciated.
-Here’s to another great assignment with lots of things learned.

Orientation And Door County

Well, orientation at Theda care was nothing like my first assignment. It was scheduled from 9:00-10:00am. I didn’t really believe it would only take an hour to do all of the human resources stuff since it took 9 hrs in New Mexico. I found the parking and the office easy enough. Someone greeted me right away and pointed me in the direction of getting my picture taken for a name badge. There were eight of us lined up and one right after the other got pictures taken then were shown to a room where we would receive a packet of procedures and protocols. We went over the no tolerance policy for drugs and alcohol, HIPAA, and harassment in the work place. Signed that we received the policies got our name badge and then were dismissed. Wow. Now what to do with the rest of my day… two days actually since my schedule for this week is Wednesday and Thursday Day shift, Friday night shift.
We decided we had time we should go explore door county, the little tiny thumb peninsula off the east side of the state out into Lake Michigan.

20140804-230734-83254270.jpg
We drove first to Green Bay then up the coast (you can call the shore that on a big lake right?) that took us right past the Packer’s stadium.

20140804-231007-83407069.jpg

20140804-231007-83407978.jpg
We tried to get a good look at Bailey’s light house but it is on private land so we could only see the top and didn’t get any kind of picture. We then stopped at the Cana light house but they charged a steep admission price so we didn’t end up doing that either. The next stop was Renards Cheese’s famous cheese curds.

20140804-231255-83575906.jpg

20140804-231254-83574911.jpg
We finally got a good look at the lake. It is hard to see because there is sooo much vegetation and greenery and few public access points.

20140804-231433-83673179.jpg

20140804-231434-83674124.jpg
Chad got a handful of lake water and splashed us. It was just a turnaround not really a good place for the kids to get out. We did all get out at Sister Bay city park. The kids had a ball playing on the play ground and in the sand. Eve decided to go swimming which made me quite glad I had grabbed some extra clothes on the way out the door for her.

Chad picked up some dessert for after dinner.

We liked the decorated goats all around town.

We noticed Egg Harbor had the same kind of thing with decorated eggs all over town.
We stopped in Fish Creek (or was it cove) for dinner in a cute second story restaurant.

Then we checked out the market down stairs and found these Wisconsin made Root Beers. We had seen so many Wisconsin brews of the alcoholic kind we had been keeping our eyes open for a Wisconsin Root Beer and although it did contain corn syrup was quite good and a fun way to experience Wisconsin.

20140804-233151-84711287.jpg
Then we enjoyed the scenic ride home and the beautiful sun set.

Not at all what I thought we would be doing today but we sure did enjoy our drive and that won’t be the last time we visit Door County.

Appleton Alliance Church

It was much harder to find a church here in Neenah area than in Farmington.  Most were Lutheran, Catholic, or really emphasized speaking in tongues on their “about us” web pages.  The nearest Nazarene churches were over an hour away.  Then Chad found Appleton Alliance, which is a huge church, 3,700 people attend Sunday morning services, with three services and a very focused kids department, which included AWANAs.  I know we won’t be around for the whole year, but that is something we have always done for school and I was so glad to have found a church that hosts it.  The first Sunday went well.  The kids department help desk was very helpful, and the kids found their classes, had fun, and learned stuff.  After church, the kids checked out books from the children’s library (still at the church) then we headed to the car to drive around town a bit more.  After finding Appleton Medical Center, the other hospital where I will be working (two hospitals I am nervous about that) and having lunch, we decided to drive around Lake Winnebago which took the rest of the afternoon.  I think everything is in order for starting tomorrow, now if only I could quiet my nerves, get rid of this headache and get a bit of rest… if only.  I would appreciate any and all prayers for tomorrow and this first week to go smoothly.

Our bed so homey and reminds us of our friends back home, Thank you Shari for the pillow cases, and Lara for the quilt.  They go with us everywhere.

Neenah Wisconsin

Wow!  Has all this stuff really happened in one day?  We woke up this morning in Madison WI at the KOA and had somehow (a good tent perhaps) managed to stay dry through all the rain during the night.  It was quite a nice campground, and I was sad we didn’t spend any time there.

20140802-215725-79045253.jpg

20140802-215723-79043177.jpg

20140802-215724-79044308.jpg We packed up, got breakfast, and picked up Myra from the Kennel.  She was happy as always, and returned with a good report card.  Seriously, they gave us a report sheet of how she did throughout her stay, and she passed with flying colors.  We had a two hour drive to Neenah and our new apartment.  We arrived to meet our new landlord at the pre appointed 12:00pm.  We all piled out of the car.  Unloading the car was the easy part, and we worked steadily at putting things away.  For this assignment we chose a new kind of adventure, unfurnished housing.  It was going to be around $2,000, a tad more, to rent furniture for three months.  Probably not a bad price for what we were going to get, but we have to get a bigger place having 5 people than I would get if it were just one, and pet fees as well to consider (way lower here than in NM).  Also, we needed to work on rebuilding our savings a bit.  We decided to take on the challenge of furnishing our provided housing.  When we had our car unloaded and half the things put away, we headed back out to dig up the furniture and accessories we would need to get by for the next three months.  Air mattresses, sheets and pillows, dishes and silverware, groceries, measuring cups, hand soap and a broom.  Our car was filled to the brim after three stores, Goodwill, the dollar store and Walmart, so we headed home to put things away.  Chad set up the beds. Caleb has a cot he found at goodwill that he is completely attached to, and the girls were digging the new sheet sets in their favorite colors.  After everything was set up, we still need to get a couch of some kind and a table and chairs and we will be completely set.  The upstairs, all things considered, actually looks pretty homy. We ate dinner on a picnic table in the back yard.  The kids played in the freshly mowed grass clippings.  They are glad to be “home”.
Goodnight from Neenah!
P.S.
Here is my new hospital.  The nerves aren’t as bad as last time, but still a little nervous.

Wisconsin State Fair

We love the fair and go to the Oregon State fair every year, so when we noticed that the Wisconsin state fair was going on at the time when we would be passing through that part of the state we decided to make a plan to attend it. In years past we have gone to the Oregon State Fair in Salem and the Idaho State Fair in Boise, so I wrongly assumed that the Wisconsin State Fair was in Madison. So this morning we woke up in Madison found a kennel for Myra and then punched the state fair address into the GPS only for it to come up as and 1hr and 20 min. away drive in Milwaukee…. Milwaukee? Then why did we come to Madison? We already had our campsite for another night and Myra in the Kennel so we decided we still wanted to attend the fair and so we headed towards Milwaukee. The fair was big and unfamiliar. There was a lot of the same things, the deep fried Oreos and animal barns. We usually go through the fair quite methodically seeing every animal, eating lunch in the horse pavilion then the artisan village and the 4 H barn. That would be followed by the other two exhibit halls looking at every cake, quilt and talking to the local authors getting a piece of Hermiston watermelon to munch on as we check out the chicks. Then the photography and tent after tent, row after row of venders. The main large expo building a few shows, the reptiles, petting zoos, and big cats. The police dogs, water dogs the dirt bikes and forestry sections.
With the layout and buildings being unfamiliar it felt like we didn’t have a game plan at all. We saw the 4 H barn first it was awesome and the kids loved it.

20140801-203940-74380483.jpg the kids made postcards from wildlife stamps and drew pictures of ducks. A man with a big camera came and took a picture of Eve drawing then asked where we were from. I think he was from a newspaper because when I said Salem, Oregon he said “Oh, I need someone local.” When we went to leave the fish and wildlife building it was downpouring along with lightning and thunder. We re-looked at the exhibits in the building and then darted out to the next closest building. This is how we came into the cream puff building and another that was all dairy products where we watched a man make fudge. We found a few empty seats in a dining tent and had some dinner. We had to make a bit of a dash to any other tents or buildings and were all fairly wet by this point. Eve had kept sneaking out from under the tent cover to dance in the rain so she was especially wet. It was at this point where we gave up on staying dry and just waded through the puddles and embraced the downpour.

20140801-210737-76057440.jpg
Two hours into the rain and the businesses were giving up on the rain stopping anytime soon. They were all closing up shop and all the rides were grounded do to the lightning (not that we were going to ride them anyway) so there wasn’t much left that we could do so we headed for the car and back to Madison to our tents that, lucky for us, had faired the rain quite well and were completely dry. Let’s hope everything dries out over the night to make packing up camp a little easier.
Good night!

The Last Day of July 2014

Over the last week, we have stayed our last night in New Mexico, two nights in Colorado, a night in Kansas, one night in Missouri, one night in Illinois, and now for our first night in Wisconsin.  It’s kind of surreal, and the scenery so far is quite similar to that of Missouri and Illinois.  So green, with beautiful trees, amazing cornfields, and picturesque farms. We have listened to Ramona Quimby and The Last Battle, and the Capitol buildings have been so fun to see.  In some ways, they have been so similar, and other ways so different.  With each tour we have learned more things about each state.  I’m so glad that we have done it.  Today we toured the Illinois Capitol building, the tallest Dome Capitol at 405 feet from ground level, and grandest of all state capitols.  The Capitol building in DC is 297 feet tall.
The stained glass window in the dome is quite impressive.

20140801-104822-38902339.jpg
We entered the Capitol through an underground tunnel that connected it to the nearby government buildings.

20140801-105422-39262857.jpg

20140801-105421-39261977.jpg
The doors to the ground floor opened up to beautiful ornate halls and staircases as well as a welcoming statue that made you feel like you just might be in Europe.

20140801-110116-39676442.jpg

20140801-110117-39677356.jpg
This tour was focused on the purpose of the building, not the workmanship, art and materials that went into making it what it is today.  Built in the late 1800’s, it cost 4.3 million dollars to build, in comparison to the Missouri Capitol building built 50 years later, which cost nearly 1 million less to build. I do have to admit, there is no comparison visually when describing the inside of each.

The street view of the Capitol is less impressive, and we found the silver dome rather intriguing.  Who do you think would be the statue out in front of the Illinois state capital main entrance?  We are in the land of Lincoln, coined on each license plate.  Well Stephen Douglas of course!
