Wisconsin State Fair

We love the fair and go to the Oregon State fair every year, so when we noticed that the Wisconsin state fair was going on at the time when we would be passing through that part of the state we decided to make a plan to attend it. In years past we have gone to the Oregon State Fair in Salem and the Idaho State Fair in Boise, so I wrongly assumed that the Wisconsin State Fair was in Madison. So this morning we woke up in Madison found a kennel for Myra and then punched the state fair address into the GPS only for it to come up as and 1hr and 20 min. away drive in Milwaukee…. Milwaukee? Then why did we come to Madison? We already had our campsite for another night and Myra in the Kennel so we decided we still wanted to attend the fair and so we headed towards Milwaukee. The fair was big and unfamiliar. There was a lot of the same things, the deep fried Oreos and animal barns. We usually go through the fair quite methodically seeing every animal, eating lunch in the horse pavilion then the artisan village and the 4 H barn. That would be followed by the other two exhibit halls looking at every cake, quilt and talking to the local authors getting a piece of Hermiston watermelon to munch on as we check out the chicks. Then the photography and tent after tent, row after row of venders. The main large expo building a few shows, the reptiles, petting zoos, and big cats. The police dogs, water dogs the dirt bikes and forestry sections.
With the layout and buildings being unfamiliar it felt like we didn’t have a game plan at all. We saw the 4 H barn first it was awesome and the kids loved it.

20140801-203940-74380483.jpg the kids made postcards from wildlife stamps and drew pictures of ducks. A man with a big camera came and took a picture of Eve drawing then asked where we were from. I think he was from a newspaper because when I said Salem, Oregon he said “Oh, I need someone local.” When we went to leave the fish and wildlife building it was downpouring along with lightning and thunder. We re-looked at the exhibits in the building and then darted out to the next closest building. This is how we came into the cream puff building and another that was all dairy products where we watched a man make fudge. We found a few empty seats in a dining tent and had some dinner. We had to make a bit of a dash to any other tents or buildings and were all fairly wet by this point. Eve had kept sneaking out from under the tent cover to dance in the rain so she was especially wet. It was at this point where we gave up on staying dry and just waded through the puddles and embraced the downpour.

Two hours into the rain and the businesses were giving up on the rain stopping anytime soon. They were all closing up shop and all the rides were grounded do to the lightning (not that we were going to ride them anyway) so there wasn’t much left that we could do so we headed for the car and back to Madison to our tents that, lucky for us, had faired the rain quite well and were completely dry. Let’s hope everything dries out over the night to make packing up camp a little easier.
Good night!

I Got My Babies Back!!!

This much awaited day has come.  It started with a phone call from Chad saying his flight from Denver to Farmington was canceled and that he would be on standby for a later flight.  I had a good night at work and was in a much better frame of mind than the previous day, so it wasn’t as upsetting of news as it might have been.  Roll with the punches, go with the flow, is the name of the game here and isn’t so bad if we recognize it as an exercise in flexibility rather than an inconvenience or mini crises.  It did however mean that I would not get to see Chad before work as I would have loved.  Sleep was good to me despite my poor decision to drink a caffeinated beverage before bed.  Jill and I had planned ahead in case of a flight delay and so we were prepared.  We left a little early for work and I followed her to the airport where we dropped off the car for Chad.  We then continued on to Shiprock and work.  Shortly after the shift started I got a message that my parents and kids were 17 miles out from the hospital and were going to stop and say hi on the way by.

It was a quick hello, but all those little hugs felt so great and did this mamas heart good.  Chad texted me that he had made it home, and a beautiful delivery soon followed.  It is well with my soul.  Now the count down is on until morning….I don’t plan on getting any sleep tomorrow.  It will be a family day for sure.

A day with Jill

With only two and a half weeks left in New Mexico, I feel my time is quickly running out.  Jill, another travel nurse, and I had talked about going and doing something together before I up and leave.  Well, it was now or never.
So this morning bright and early for us night shifters (8:30) I picked Jill up and we headed towards Colorado.  When Suzanne and Jeremy were here we had visited a little lake (reservoir) up in the mountains above Durango.  It was so peaceful and so beautiful that I wanted to go back and see it at least one more time.  Jill loves scenic drives and was game to trying to figure out a way to get all the way around the lake.  We did it! We were wondering if we were going to need the 4 wheel drive a few times but we did it, and it was beautiful.  So worth the drive up.  Here are a few pictures from the back side of Lake Vallecito.

After our rough riding dirt road adventure around the lake, we headed towards Pagosa Hot Springs in Pagosa Springs.  I had seen pictures and was very excited to see it for myself.
It was definitely lunch time when we pulled into Pagosa Springs.  Our stomaches were insistent on that.  We picked a cute little restaurant called “Hoggs Breath” named after Boss Hogg, the founder of the establishment, originally called Boss Hoggs Restaurant and Tavern.  We enjoyed reading the history of this little place as well as of the town and the hot springs in their newspaper like menu.

The hot springs was only another mile or two from the restaurant, so we got there shortly after noon.  I had been hoping for overcast, maybe some rain, but no lightning.  Well I got my wish for the most part.

We decided to take the scenic route home through Ignacio, which took us right past Chimney Rock National Monument.  It was before 5:00pm so we went in.  There were no more tours scheduled for the day but we got information on the ruins at the top and admired chimney rock from a distance.  It wasn’t much, but it would do.

20140708-185903-68343840.jpg
Then the rain started, and we both rolled down our windows to take deep breaths of fresh air/ fresh rain smell.  Are we in Heaven?  No, still Colorado!

With wipers on full blast and windows down slightly more than a crack so we could experience the weather but in a smaller dose… It was pure bliss.
Thank you Jill for a thrilling, exploring, memory making kind of day.

Monsoon Season

Monsoon Season here in New Mexico is July, August and September.  Monsoons are very heavy rains that last only a short time and frequently cause flash flooding.  New Mexico and Arizona both get the majority of their years worth of water via the summer monsoons.  We have been warned by lots of people that they are coming and today on our greenbelt walk I thought we (Myra and I) might be in for our first monsoon.  But no, we were in for a different kind of experience, dry rain.  That is where it rains, but because it is so dry and hot the rain doesn’t actually make it to the ground before it evaporates.  It made for a cooler walk but I was secretly hoping to get dumped on.

Honduras day 9

Today we headed up to Copan.  On our way up we stopped off to run across the border and have our picture taken in Guatemala.

image

We then checked into our hotel and went to have lunch.  After some shopping and walking around town went up to macaw mountain.  We got to see a lot of different parrots and birds, which was a lot of fun.

Tomorrow it is off to the Mayan ruins.

Honduras day 7

We did it!  We have a concrete floor in the church.  It consisted of loading the mixer with 15 gallons of water, 7 cubic feet of sand, and 100 lbs of cement, then repeat.  That is what the whole day consisted of.  It was hard work but rewarding.  That was also the project that Bob our missionary coordinator wanted accomplished by our team. Tomorrow we hope to finish up the platform at the front of the church.

I feel blessed that we have done so much while we are here.  Also thankful for the great group of guys that we have on the trip.  The project that we have been working on was just the right size, and within the skill set of our team members. Thank you God for the wonderful plans that he has for us all.

The Low Down on Our Car Situation

It was Thursday morning in Sedona when I first noticed that the car was hard to get into 1st gear.  Poor car, it must be tired, as I have been driving it pretty hard.  We immediately thought it was a transmission fluid issue and consulted Mary Beth’s personal car expert (dad).  He assured us that wasn’t the issue, but what was?  The car quickly warmed up and the problem went away, all but forgotten.

Friday morning I could not get it in 1st or reverse for a few minutes, but again, like the day before, it quickly went away. Could it wait to be dealt with until Chad got home?

Saturday morning Mary Beth was stuck dealing with it.  I did feel bad about that.

Sunday morning with Valerie along for the ride, we held our breath for the first few miles each time I had to change gears.  I dropped her off at home, got gas, coffee for breakfast and headed to church, scouting for car shops along the way.  I had Sunday off, but no one was open.  Was I going to get stranded somewhere before I could get it in to be looked at?  I was having to back into a site and pull out in second, and even that was hard.  After church service I got two referrals for mechanics, and was praying that they would at least be able to get it in for a look in the morning.

Monday, my alarm went off at 7:00.  I searched google for Mr. Muffler and found the number, directions and business hours, 8am-5pm.  A phone call, shower and a walk for Myra and I was on my way.  I was sweating it as I worked to change gears saying a little prayer each time.  If this problem didn’t get fixed I was going to be stranded soon.  Thanks to the Silverton FBC staff for AAA coverage as a good bye gift, I had an emergency plan.  I pulled into the Mechanic very relieved to have made it and praying that it wouldn’t completely drain our emergency fund to fix it.  Please let it not be the transmission.

I got the car all checked in and watched the mechanic struggle to get the car in gear for the test drive. Pulling out a book I figured there was no reason to stress about it now, and I might as well be productive with my time.  About an hour later, the mechanic came out to discuss the plan.  I should have scanned his diagnostic assessment form so I could relay the information better to Chad, but it was not the Transmission, it was the Clutch.  I was in seventh heaven.  The mechanic is in walking distance, through sketchy neighborhoods.  I should be able to pick it up on Wednesday, my only other day off this week, and since I carpool with my work friends I have rides to work.  It should all work out.  I’m high as a kite excited about Gods provisions.
